Costa Rica Calling (Part Three)…

“Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.” Costa Rica calling…she has stayed on my mind for much of the next few years.  Following my first foray to the island, everything that had given me some semblance of security began crumbling around me.  My sense of self began evaporating (very slowly have you) before my very eyes.  I felt terminally lost and knew that I didn’t have the emotional skills to navigate the daunting road ahead.  In some ways, it felt as if I […]

Costa Rica Calling (Part 2): Spectacular Beauty Awaits

Costa Rica calls…In the summer of 2011, I felt my life imploding, mostly on an emotional level.  The foundation of my marriage was crumbling and intuitively we both knew that it was coming to an end.  It’s never easy ending a marriage; instinctively we may have searched for the culprit or wanted to place blame on one or the other, but we knew things just weren’t working.  It makes it especially difficult when there are two young children involved.  My wife (at the time) and I tried to make things as friendly as possible for the kids while the inevitable

Listen to David narrate this blog! But first, it’s important

The Treasure Within

The Treasure Within…

It was raining; it was cold and wet; I walked; my clothes damp—none of these things discouraged me from taking in the moment.  A dreary, rainy Monday morning spurred something inside me to get out into nature as I watched people hurriedly drive to work and I wondered: why are we all rushing around so much?  What are we chasing?  We rise each morning to rush to work in order to pay for things that bring us little joy.  If anything, they become the anchors of our life—the luxury car, the over-sized house, the name-brand clothing and jewelry, 50 weeks

Here Comes the Sun…

Snow fell on Texas last week as temperatures dropped to zero shutting down large swaths of North Texas.  To say that this is unusual is an understatement.  I wrote a friend of mine to see how he and his family were holding up and he said, “We have been without power for about 36 hours.”  My instinct was to express remorse that his family was going through a challenging time, but before I could even respond to his text he added, “It’s okay though.  My wife, kids and I have been playing board games, doing puzzle’s and listening to music.
