I was deep in a meditation when I heard this message whispered to me. It intrigued me to think that life could truly be this simple. By understanding twelve important laws, we have the ability to align with our destiny.

“Master the 12 Universal Laws, and you master life.”

When I mentioned this to a friend, I could tell he was perplexed. More importantly, I could see he had never heard of the 12 Universal Laws. As he stared back at me with a somewhat blank look in his eyes, I asked him, “Are you aware that there are 12 Universal Laws?”

“I didn’t even know there was one Universal Law, let alone twelve,” he told me.

A great many of us are unaware of these laws. Most of us were never taught them in school, and I am certain my own parents never knew them to pass on to me. Many people first met one of them, the Law of Attraction, through books like The Secret, and a great many dismissed it as “new-age” mumbo jumbo. I have heard countless people say, “I tried it and it didn’t work.” They tried thinking or intending their wish into existence, and no matter how hard they thought about it, it never manifested.

“Did you apply the other eleven laws along with the Law of Attraction?” I began asking.

The same blank look came back, and the answer was always “no.” That got me thinking: how would life be different if people knew these laws exist and could use them to better their lives? This guide is my answer. Here are the twelve laws, what each one means, and one simple way to practice each, starting today.

The 12 Universal Laws at a Glance

Law One

The Law of Universal Oneness

The first illusion mankind believed, the one that set the course for so much pain and anguish in the world, was that we are all separate. That great fallacy led us away from our true spiritual essence and away from the Source. Everything in this Universe is connected. Every human being, every animal, every tree and rock, even the grass we walk on, is connected to the Source that makes up this divine matrix we call the Universe.

So whenever we make a choice, take an action, or even think a thought, it affects the whole on some level. That may sound like a lot of responsibility, but when we live with an awareness of this interconnection, we give ourselves the capacity to live our most divine lives. Knowing we are all connected, we come to understand the power of empathy, and empathy has the capacity to change the world. Through heart-centered living we become the change we have been seeking. We become the way.

Try this: The next time someone frustrates you, pause before you answer and silently say, “You and I are connected.” Notice how the conversation changes.

Law Two

The Law of Attraction

Let’s talk about this law next, because so many people have heard of it. It was made famous by The Secret, but an early version of the idea appears in Wallace D. Wattles’ The Science of Getting Rich, written in 1910. What we think and feel deep inside ourselves is reflected back to us in our physical world.

You have probably heard that what we think is what we become. In reality, what we believe is what we become. Our faith is what powers our intentions. No matter how many times you say, “I have an abundant life,” if you don’t believe it in the deepest recesses of your soul, it will not show up in your physical reality. This is also why the Law of Attraction so often “fails” on its own: it works hand in hand with the other eleven laws, especially the Law of Inspired Action.

Try this: Write down one thing you want. Then write down, honestly, the belief that whispers “that will never happen for me.” That second sentence is what you are really attracting, and it is the one to work on.

Law Three

The Law of Vibration

The mystics have long taught that nothing in the Universe is truly still. Everything is in motion, and everything carries a vibration that is unique to itself. Higher vibrations draw higher vibrations, and lower vibrations draw lower ones. This is where the phrase “like attracts like” comes from. In a very real sense, we are what we are vibrating.

This is how we attract our tribe of fellow souls. “Your vibe attracts your tribe.” Your closest friends will give you a very good snapshot of your own frequency. To change anything in your life, begin by changing your own vibration, and you will begin attracting something new.

Try this: Think of the five people you spend the most time with. What energy do they share? Is it the energy you want to be living in a year from now?

“Your vibe attracts your tribe.”

Law Four

The Law of Correspondence

This law is closely related to the Law of Universal Oneness, and it is often summed up in the ancient Hermetic phrase “as above, so below; as within, so without.” Patterns repeat themselves throughout the Universe, from the spiral of a galaxy to the spiral of a seashell, and the large patterns echo in the small ones.

The same is true of our own lives. Our outer world tends to mirror our inner world. A cluttered mind often lives in a cluttered house. The same argument shows up with a different partner, the same frustration with a different boss. The key is to recognize these patterns, so we can keep the ones that serve us and change the ones that no longer do.

Try this: Name one situation that keeps repeating in your life. Ask yourself, “What inside me keeps calling this back?”

Law Five

The Law of Inspired Action

This is one of the most important laws, and one of the least used, which is often what keeps the Law of Attraction from working. For our intentions to manifest, we must take action toward making them real in the physical world. When our actions and our intentions are aligned, the possibility for manifestation opens up.

Our dreams are not going to arrive on the doorstep without some effort on our part. We take a step, and the Universe responds. This is dancing the “two-step” with the Universe. When we stand still, the Universe stands still with us. Through inspired action we make our dreams a reality.

Try this: Choose one thing you have been intending. Take one small, concrete step toward it in the next 24 hours: send the email, sign up for the class, write the first page.

Law Six

The Law of Cause and Effect

This law is often called the Law of Karma. Whatever you put out into the world returns to you. Every thought, word, and action is a seed, and every seed eventually bears fruit. No matter what we do to another person, a loving gesture or one that causes pain, it returns to us in some manner.

This law is a gift, because it lets us see how our actions affect other people and ourselves. It is directly aligned with the Law of Universal Oneness: we are all connected, so whatever we do to another, we are really doing to ourselves.

Try this: Pick one result in your life you are unhappy with, and trace it backward. What causes, large or small, planted that seed?

Law Seven

The Law of Compensation

This law is similar to the Law of Cause and Effect, but it goes a step further: what returns to you is not only what you do, but what is in your heart when you do it. Words are powerful, but our feelings and beliefs are what truly power our ability to manifest.

If you do a good deed with resentment, what returns is resentment. If you do it with love in your heart, love returns as compensation. The Universe pays us in the same currency we spend.

Try this: Do one kind thing today that no one will ever know about. Notice how it feels to give without keeping score.

“The Universe pays us in the same currency we spend.”

Law Eight

The Law of Perpetual Transmutation of Energy

Everything in the Universe is constantly changing. Change is the only constant. Energy is always moving from one form into another, the way ice becomes water and water becomes steam. Nothing is stuck forever, including us.

The teaching also holds that higher energies can transform lower ones. Kindness can soften anger, and gratitude can lift despair. The beautiful part of this law is the realization that no matter where you are in your life, you have the ability and the capacity to change it into the life you want it to be.

Try this: The next time you feel stuck in a heavy mood, do one thing that raises your energy, even a little: a walk, a favorite song, or three things you are grateful for. Watch the feeling begin to shift.

Law Nine

The Law of Relativity

This law teaches that everything in the Universe is neutral when seen in isolation. It is only when we give something meaning that we see that meaning reflected in our reality. There is really no “good” or “bad”; it is our impression that hands out those labels.

The Universe is a blank canvas that projects our thoughts and beliefs back to us. Our mind is like a movie projector, and our thoughts are the film fed through it. If our thoughts are filled with strife, a horror movie of sorts, that is what plays on the screen. If our thoughts are of love, compassion, and kindness, that is the movie reflected back. Let the movie of your life be one you would be proud to show the world. Make it a masterpiece!

Try this: When something “bad” happens today, ask, “What else could this mean?” Find at least one other way to see it.

“Let the movie of your life be one you would be proud to show the world.”

Law Ten

The Law of Gender

Everything in this Universe is made of both masculine and feminine energy, which Chinese philosophy calls yin and yang. Many people think of these as opposing forces, but in reality they are complementary forces that cannot exist without one another. Each of us carries both.

When the two combine into one unit of energy, the yogis call it the highest form of yoga. A divine union is born that makes the whole greater than the sum of its parts. We see this in “power couples” who are stronger together than they would be apart. When complementary energies unite, the union has the power to change the world.

Try this: Notice which energy you lean on most: doing, pushing, and deciding, or receiving, nurturing, and allowing. Spend a day practicing the other.

Law Eleven

The Law of Polarity

Everything in this Universe has an opposite. Happiness has sadness, hot has cold, up has down, and day has night. Without each, we could not discern the other. Every opposite has value as a teacher, giving us the opportunity to choose and to create the life we desire.

If the Universe chose for us, it would erase our free will, and it is through free will that we take the journey of remembering that we are all connected. We are given the choice between love and hate so that we can realize the truth of the very first law, the Law of Universal Oneness.

Try this: Think of a hard season you have lived through. What did it teach you that the easy seasons never could?

Law Twelve

The Law of Rhythm

Everything has a cycle and a rhythm. Life and death are forever linked. Fall gives way to winter, which turns to spring and then summer. The moon waxes and wanes, and we pass through seasons in our own lives. We may be married for years and then find ourselves single, or live in abundance and one day find ourselves in lack. A once-beautiful rose withers and returns to the earth.

Understanding these cycles helps us become unattached to any one state of life. The tides rise and recede, and each is okay. It is only when we cling to one state over another that we bring discontent into our lives. The yogi treats each stage as just that, a stage. When we understand that all things change, we can find peace when they do.

Try this: Name the season you are in right now: planting, growing, harvesting, or resting. Ask what that season is asking of you, instead of wishing it were a different one.

Master the Laws, Master Your Life

These are the 12 Universal Laws, and they are here to help you master your life. Whether you believe in them matters not. As I tell people all the time, you can disbelieve in the law of gravity, but if you step off a fifteen-story building, you are going to fall, whether you believe in gravity or not.

These laws were given to us by the Source to help us create our very best lives. Master these twelve laws, and you will master life. I look forward to seeing each of your masterpieces.

“Make the movie of your life extraordinary.”

May you stay blessed on your journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the 12 Universal Laws?

The 12 Universal Laws are spiritual principles said to govern how energy, thought, and action shape our lives. They are: Universal Oneness, Attraction, Vibration, Correspondence, Inspired Action, Cause and Effect, Compensation, Perpetual Transmutation of Energy, Relativity, Gender, Polarity, and Rhythm.

Who created the 12 Universal Laws?

No single person created them. The list most people know today draws on much older traditions, especially the seven Hermetic principles described in The Kybalion (1908), along with the New Thought writers of the early twentieth century, such as Wallace D. Wattles. Many teachers have shaped and named the twelve since then.

How are the 12 Universal Laws different from the 7 Hermetic Principles?

The seven Hermetic principles are Mentalism, Correspondence, Vibration, Polarity, Rhythm, Cause and Effect, and Gender. Several of the twelve laws carry the same names. The twelve add more practical laws for daily life, such as Inspired Action, Compensation, and Relativity.

Which Universal Law should I start with?

Start with the first, the Law of Universal Oneness, because every other law flows from it. If you have tried the Law of Attraction without results, go straight to the Law of Inspired Action. It is usually the missing piece.

Why didn’t the Law of Attraction work for me?

Usually because it was practiced alone. The Law of Attraction works together with the other eleven laws. Belief that doesn’t match your desire (Attraction), no action toward it (Inspired Action), or giving with a resentful heart (Compensation) can all keep it from showing up.

    Interesting thing..

.. I was on my to the barber this am. While enroute, I Started to have an awareness that after a few years of studying conciousness it occurred to me out of nowhere that I should start to study and fully understand the natural laws of the universe. I came to an awareness that in by doing so, I could attain the ultimate possible projection of myself unto this world. I decided to do a search… and I now find myself here. Very interesting.

    With Gratitude,

It all makes so much sense. While having been aware of some of the laws naturally without knowing them as laws, I have ignored others which has hampered my life. I’ll try to make the most out of it now.

Just a detail: when you talk about yin and yang, hopefully they are complimentary, but they are actually complementary.

    1. David

      Eugen,

Thank you so much for writing. My hope is that by having a deeper understanding of these laws we can all utilize them in ways that improve our lives and bring us closer to the Source.

Thank you also for bringing my typo to my attention. I’ll make sure to modify that.

Sending you many blessings on this day and each day beyond.

Thank you for this enlightening information. I’m trying to find the strength to put these laws to good use. It’s been a difficult journey. I think I’m going to use your advice given to someone else in the comments, which is to sit in silence. Thanks.

    1. David

      Christa,

Thank you for writing. At times when life becomes the most difficult for me, I will take my left hand and place it over my heart, and then place my right hand over my left. In the space of silence ask your Highest Self, “What do I need to know right now in this moment.” Amazing wisdom comes from within, we must simply take the time to ask for guidance from that All Knowing Source that resides within the heart.

I hope this message finds you at the perfect time to help you on your journey. Stay blessed always.

Just wondering how we “know” these Laws exist. Any ideas on how they were handed down to mankind?

    1. David

      Andrew,

Thank you for writing. It is difficult to trace the origins of these laws to a source unless we are talking about the “Source.” These laws are intrinsic and are simply experiential.

Having said this, these 12 universal laws are unchanging laws of our universe that ancient cultures have always intuitively known and have passed down to subsequent generations.

The roots of these laws are often associated with Ho’oponopono, a meditation for freedom originating in ancient Hawaiian culture (I have written an additional blog on this as well) while some of these laws have been attributed to hermetic philosophy going back to ancient Egypt.

No matter their source, their essence is timeless and when applied with discipline give us the opportunity to create our most harmonious life.

      I hope this helps.

Wishing you many blessings on our journey.

      David

Thank you for explaining these laws, I was led to your website by a friend who had been trying to help me through a difficult time in my life. She told me to open up my problem to the universe and ask for help with it. I do believe that the process of healing has already started after a very short time indeed. I hope to put into practice what the laws teach to lead me to a better path and ultimately a better life with more meaning and clarity and less judgement and negativity. Thank you again.

    1. David

      Melanie,

Each person’s journey begins and develops at the perfect time as your certainly has as well. You are exactly in the right place at the right time.

As you continue on your path, consider taking time each day to sit in silence and listen to your own Inner Voice that knows and has always had the answers. After studying the 12 laws and truly desiring an understanding of how they worked, I only found understanding after reading your blog of the 12 laws the way you beautifully explained them to be. I am so grateful for this better understanding that was very different than all of the others I had read! It has helped me begin on a journey of healing and forgiveness, thru writing, and ultimately movie production, about my childhood story. Applying these laws helps put a more positive outlook and beautiful spin on how our life experiences, allow us to blossom into greatness and live out our desires. Thank you again.

I am very curious about these laws, could you tell me where they come from?

        1. David

          Tkay,

Thank you for reading my blog and for taking the time to write me. I hope that you are staying blessed and aligned with your Highest Integrity on your journey.

The 12 Universal Laws have been handed down dating back many years. These are ancient, mystical, and esoteric secret teachings dating back more than 5,000 years from ancient Egypt to ancient Greece and to the Vedic tradition of ancient India. Each of these civilizations shared a common thread when they passed down these twelve Spiritual Laws of the Universe.

Not unlike when mathematics and science were shared throughout the generations these spiritual laws have been shared to help us remember and align once again in remembrance that we are One With God. These laws come directly from the Divine as a Gift to help us on our soul’s journey through life.

I hope this provides you enough insight to continue your studies as you evolve towards your Highest Consciousness. May the Light of Love Shine on you always. Sat Nam!

David, I really enjoyed your article as well. My talent is teaching others mindfulness and meditation to incite their individual truths. I do this by way of whatever skillful means necessary in order to dispel illusion. Although truth is subject to each individual, the 12 universal laws are concrete. These are my road map, given from source to easily understand Divine Truth and Divine Wisdom. You did an excellent job explaining them!
Now I’m just curious if Sat Nam is from the Sikh word meaning “God is divine”?

      Dom,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write. It brings me great joy to discover another Teacher of the Divine. In the Sikh tradition, “Sat Nam” translates most closely to “I am Truth, Truth is my identity.” We use this mantra during many kriyas and meditations in Kundalini Yoga.

Stay blessed on your journey and continue spreading the Light wherever you travel.

This was a brilliant take on the 12 Universal Laws and a very helpful source of information. I think you could have included within the Law of Correspondence that “our outer world is a direct reflection of our inner world”. This information directly links to the meaning of the word ‘correspondence’, because the conditions in our mind are closely connected or “CORRESPOND” to the conditions in the outer physical world.

Nevertheless, thank you for this wonderful article.

      Ben,

Thank you for taking the time to write. Love your idea about how our inner world reflects our outer world. Heal ourselves and we heal the world.

Stay blessed on your journey. Sat Nam!
